It is entirely possible and even probable that our human race is doomed. The easier Science makes access to powerful technologies, the easier it is for a single person or a small group of people to utilize those technologies. The the most obvious knee-jerk response from Governments will inevitability be civil restrictions and reductions in human liberties. It is a downward spiral.
Let's not forget public opinion. Some groups will be violently opposed to technology related to human cloning or population control. They simply look over the fact that technology is responsible for people living longer and the amazing rates of infant survival. These people are willing to use violence to obtain their ends. Other groups are violently opposed to any government that is not based on their religious ideals. These people are willing to use technology to punish humanity for existing as infidels. There are many examples but the point is that they all use technology for their own ends.
America uses technology in much the same way as the Roman Empire. Roads allowed troops to move faster to put down rebellions and aqueducts brought water to strategic locations. These things were not just the result of administration. They were the result of what was then state of the art technology. The formula for concrete was once such a great secret that there was a death sentence for anyone who gave it out. The Roman Empire lasted for thousands of years, primarily because Romans absorbed technology from cultures and reapplied it in much the same way as the United States.
But Roman technology did not include the power of the atom or the gene. The economics of Roman technology did not scale like modern technologies. Technology was also not evolving as fast as it is in our age.
If you consider other people's perceptions, America must appear absolutely mad to much of the world on this day. Americans have been slapped awake and are now forcing their doctrine down the throats of others. No one is yet standing in our way. If history is a judge, it is only a matter of time. It is easy to predict that we will strike out, and we will be struck. In the mean time, technology marches on. Government will someday attempt to stop the rampage of knowledge but it will fail. The only way to stop the advancement of Science today is to take over the world. Maybe that is what the World Trade Organization is all about. I don't know. All I know is that because of ignorance and intolerance, it is possible that our human race is doomed.
It is impossible to turn this world technological machine around in time. To attempt to turn the technological boat of mankind around in the middle of this stream would be the beginning of the end. Freedom, not restrictions is mankind's only hope.
