It is said that we become what we eat.
If this statement is true, then what our food eats becomes us. It has been said that the foot and mouth disease currently sweeping across Europe is the direct result of feeding cattle, sheep and pigs the remains of their own kind. It represents forced cannibalism on other species and it is unethical.
While farmers feed farm animals their own, these same Farmers are constantly overloading these same farm animals with antibiotics. Anyone should be able to guess what can happen as a result as potentially infectious material is constantly reprocessed over time.
The true problem is not only the food that we feed animals on which our species depends. The fundamental cause is that low esteem to which humans place on other creatures of our planet.
The standards to which we choose to place animals in our trust becomes the standards which we assign for ourselves as a society. We are foolish to ignore this fact.
